The first 4 songs are commercialized but 2 of them are instant radio hits. "Believe, and This is it." This albums last 4 songs are decent. The middle 5 are terrible ballads that are just getting dogged on every review. I am a huge Staind fan. They only have 2 hard songs on here. Rainy Day Parade, and This is it. Mike Plays accoustic on This is it for no apparent reason. "The corner," has background soul singers. They bring some new stuff, and 2 songs resemble Floyd which they said was their direction. Its consistent with what they have been putting out but once again songs 5-9 are so woe is me, and awful. Rolling Stone gave them a 3.5 out of 5 stars, and make Aaron to look like a suicidal poser that never changed for 13 years. This album will only be enjoyed by Staind fans.

Well i agree with mike. There are more ups and downs in this staind album than any of their albums before. in chapter V we got an idea that staind is now looking to put an impression only on the loyal staind fans and i think that they have continued that. the lyrics are inspiring as always but this album somehow lacks the ability of attracting new people to become stainsouls like break the cycle and 14 shades of grey. I became a staindsoul because of aaron's words and that reason is good enough to keep me that way. Definitely an album for a pure blooded and loyal staindsoul

I have been a huge fan of Staind since Dysfunction. This CD I would have to say is their worst. My order is 1. Break the Cycle, 2. Chapter V, 3. Dysfunction, 4. 14 Shades of Grey, 5. The Illusion of Progress. Obviously, I am leaving out Tormented. I just feel like that album wasn't really Staind, and shouldn't be considered a part of their collection. The Illusion of Progress shows nothing new from Staind. Their previous effort, Chapter V, I actually considered their second best album, but this album is very generic. The lyrics are pretty solid as always, but the guitars and vocals are nothing special. Chapter V made me think that this album could live up to those expectations once again, but I was wrong. Regardless, I love Staind and I will be a fan for life.
