Jason Mraz - Love For A Child
Song Title :Love For A Child | Artist/Band : Jason Mraz
There's a picture on my kitchen wall Looks like Jesus and his friends involved There's a party getting started in the yard There's a couple getting steamy in the car parked in the drive Was I too young to see this with my eyes?
By the pool last night, apparently The chemicals weren't mixed properly You hit your head and then forgot your name And then you woke up at the bottom by the drain And now your altitude and memory's a shame
What about taking this empty cup and filling it up With a little bit more of innocence I haven't had enough, it's probably because when you're young It's okay to be easily ignored I like to believe it was all about love for a child
And when the house was left in shambles Who was there to handle all the broken bits of glass Was it mom who put my dad out on his ass or the other way around Well I'm far too old to care about that now
What about taking this empty cup and filling it up With a little bit more of innocence I haven't had enough, it's probably because when you're young It's okay to be easily ignored I'd like to believe it was all about love for a child
It's kinda nice to work the floor since the divorce I've been enjoying both my Christmases and my birthday cakes And taking drugs and making love at far too young an age and they never check to see my grades What a fool I'd be to start complaining now
What about taking this empty cup and filling it up With a little bit more of innocence I haven't had enough, it's probably because when you're young It's okay to be easily ignored I'd love to believe it's all about love for a child
It was all about love...

Wow. This is an incredible song.
I started to deal with my own parents' divorce in my late twenties as well.
The f**cked up thing about divorce is that it forces the kids to choose between two belief systems: 1) a future in which every love is doomed and that they will eventually follow in their parents' footsteps; or 2) that they will be "better than" their parents and succeed where their parents failed -- and that is something no child wants to do.
We want to believe that our parents' split was for the best. But at the same time, if they were not meant to be together, then in some way we were not meant to be.
The children of divorced parents live with this kind of cognitive tension al the time, and if you haven't lived it, even if you can imagine it, I promise you can not truly understand it.
There's a lot of humor here -- the two christmases and two birthdays thing is so funny and true -- but a lot of people might call this a depressing song. Stlll, I think the sentiment that Mraz reaches -- focusing on that moment of love that created him -- is a truly beautiful, hopeful and courageous one.
I'm with you, brother.

Jason Mraz uses humor to illustrate a common issue among kids today. Many kids growing up have parents who are divorced or separated. It’s a very common issue—most of my friends’ parents are divorced or separated. The truth is that all kids are growing up faster today. To top it off, switching houses and parents every other week allows kids to live a more unrestrained lifestyle. Without consistent parenting, the kids can get away with a lot of things. “Taking drugs and making love at far too young an age, and they never check to see my grades, what a fool I’d be to start complaining now,” illustrates that kids take advantage of their liberal lifestyle that is made possible because of their family situation. It’s a nice thought—we were all conceived because of the love our parents felt for each other at that time. But if that moment of love isn’t going to last, it can affect the child for the rest of their life. (woohoo, lee!)
