Eagles - Long Road Out Of Eden
Song Title :Long Road Out Of Eden | Artist/Band : Eagles
Moon shining down through the palms Shadows moving on the sand Somebody whispering the 23rd Psalm Dusty rifle in his trembling hands Somebody trying just to stay alive He got promises to keep Over the ocean in America Far away, the master sleeps
Silent stars blinking in the blackness of an endless sky Gold, silver satellites, ghostly caravans passing by Galaxies unfolding and new worlds being born Pilgrims and prodigals creeping toward the dawn And it's a long road out of Eden
Music blasting from an SUV On a bright and sunny day Rolling down the interstate In the good old USA Having lunch at the petroleum club Smoking fine cigars and swapping lies They say, "Give me 'nother slice of that barbecued brisket Give me 'nother piece of that pecan pie"
Freeways flickering; cell phones chiming a tune We're riding to Utopia; road map says we'll be arriving soon Captains of the old order clinging to the reins Assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains But it's a long road out of Eden
Back home, I was so certain; the path was very clear But now I have to wonder - what are we doing here? And I'm not counting on tomorrow and I can't tell wrong from right But I'd give anything to be there in your arms tonight
Weaving down the American highway Through the litter and the wreckage, and the cultural junk Bloated with entitlement, bloated on propaganda Now we're driving dazed and drunk
Went down the road to Damascus, the road to Mandalay Met the ghost of Caesar on the Appian Way He said, "It's hard to stop this binging once you get a taste But the road to empire is a bloody, stupid waste"
Behold the bitten apple, the power of the tools But all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools And it's a long road out of Eden

Once again, Henley's lyrical talent for the epic shines through. Right up there with "Hotel California" and "The Last Resort." Awesome CD. Lyrics here just need to be changed from "bloated on propaganda" to "loaded".

A testament to a lyricist's ability to make sense out of the mayhem. Whether you are liberal or conservative, you should get a clear message: America needs to look at itself. NONE of the pundits has the answers, and we are our Brother's keeper.

My son is currently on his second tour of "Eden" and fortunately he has no wife or children to miss yet. However, he reflects the words of Henley in one of his letters home. He writes,"I came here to fight for the innocent. Now I wonder. If war is fought for noble causes by righteous men, then why does it seem only the innocent are suffering here?

This is one of the deepest songs ever written, sentiments which are felt by the majority of Americans, however most prefer to keep their heads in the sand and ignore it. We forget, however, that ignoring something is actually giving consent to allow it to further propagate and infest an already infested people and land like maggots turning into flies that breed more maggots.
It would take a year to fully dissect these lyrics, however, that is true America today. Our governing bodies, insurance companies and medical professions have reaped the billions that the food industries in the United States have sowed. They do not want us well because that would bring down one of the only remaining industries left in America - the health profession.

Entitlement and propaganda is what our youth of today has been conditioned since childbirth to know like the proverbial worm in a bottle of horseradish - that is all they know.
We've got Tyson partnering with the US government to produce fuel from chicken shit while none of those chickens are raised in the US, none are antibiotic free as they claim, so we can be fuel independent - so we can fuel the gas hog SUVs that outnumber cars on the road 7 to one.
Our cell phones with their masts on every corner like Starbucks, with their EMF's killing our bees. Our US Sonar is disorienting whales and dolphins, with once friendly sea otters now becoming violent just as we are.
We have rocket fuel in our drinking water and all our systems, and global warming is blamed on our lawnmowers - Mr. Gore, lawnmowers don't run on rocket fuel.
We have done this to ourselves, and we are doing nothing to stop this insanity.
Yes, we are weary and tired. But we have to regroup and voice our feelings, and do something to stop these power drunk leaders we have.
Christianity was based on the teachings of Jesus Christ - a humble, honest, simple man, one of the two most powerful men to have walked the Earth. Hitler was the other.
Who will prove to be the most powerful?
Look around. Who's winning?

Hotel California was "Long Road out of Eden" in it's prenatal state. Same seed that has now grown into fruition and the chaos we have given our consent and allowed it to happen.
It is believed that original Eden was possibly located in the middle east where Adam was created from dust, and the apple he and Eve shared was the realization of good vs. evil. Prior to that, it was simply "the age of innocence" - of joy.
Now we have been consumed and brainwashed by our corrupted nation of greed infested grandiose leaders and megaconglomerate corporations, and sadly enough not many in the US see it. Like members of a cult, they follow blindly like trusting, willing lambs, and unlike Jim Jones who served the Kool-Aide in one dose, we are being given miniscule daily doses not from China, but from our own parasitic filth we have bred such as Monsanto, Cargill and Conagra that are now spawning outward trying to do the same to other cultures.
My friends, they don't hate us because we are beautiful - they hate us because we have become deaf, dumb and blind and lethal.
Thank you, Mr. Henley. I some some of this message will penetrate anyone willing to open their eyes, however if it threatens that entitlement, I don't see it happening soon. This generation has already been conditioned.
Take things away from them, and they'll shoot their parents, their friends, their classmates, or themselves.

Just when you think you are the dumbest person on the earth something/someone redeems you. I think you got it right Don. I am not American but I am your neighbor from the north. Just as guilty and have just as much blood on our hands. I served in the Canadian Air Force during the 60's and have a good feel just where we're going with this insanity. Not only the USA but all participating countries.
Somewhat like the Roman Empire the USA and its allies are going down the identical path to distruction. Watch out for the 'Dragon' that supplies us with our cheap goods.
Love the song.

"Captains of the old order clinging to the reins Assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains But it's a long road out Eden."
How in the hell did we allow a bumbling idiot like George Bush in the White House. He is the Captain of old order. And somehow that sob has put our soldiers in the middle of this god awful war.
But Don is wrong. We can still change things if we use our power of vote and get the right people in office. We can have clean air and a green planet.
What disturbs me is this shit was all talked about in 1970. WTF. How did we allow ourselves to let this happen. Well, we succumbed to greed and binge. And now look where we are. Middle class families struggling, poor people dieing in our own country.
Sorry for all the political commentry, but somehow we got gready and now we are paying the price.

"What do I do with my heart" is another song on the same album, and it just melts me. I have a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye every time I hear it. The lyrics are so 'close to home' with my life. Ya gotta love Don's voice and lyrics though ..... Wish to hell I could sing like that.

May I just add that I was just stoked to see the line-up together for this album, with the individual yet blending vocals and tasteful guitar licks. Joe Walsh is a HOOT, and you should get the DVD of "Crossroads Festival" organised by Eric Clapton, because Joe is featured with great humour and hot guitar breaks ..... Man I feel inspired now and will blow the cobwebs off the Washburn and dust off the Crate amp, and drive my neighbours insane.....

When i first heard this song, i didn't know how long it went. So, when at about 6:15 minutes after that EPIC solo, it quietened down, i thought 'there's gotta be more! Another verse, surely?!' And then the acoustic picks up the pace and Don says it as it is. Yep, it takes "Hotel California's" mantle. The irony is that i don't think too many people are listening to this new take on where we're at. They're still stuck in Hotel California because they don't want to leave. Too caught up on the binging, eh?

"Our cell phones with their masts on every corner like Starbucks, with their EMF's killing our bees." Almost right. Actually it is all of the toxic waste Genetically Modified foods like Soy,Corn, Rape seed, beets, that are killing all of our bees. They know it and are going to ignore it so that Monsanto, Bayer, Dow chemical, and Du Pont call all make money poisoning our food. It is made with Roundup bug spray in it. Killing bugs and people. Have a google on the Toxicty of Roundup. You will be surprised at what you find. Of course Monsanto "claims" it magically disappears when it is done growing. Food NEVER stops growing. Seeds continue to grow potatoes literally never stop growing. It is disgusting but USA & Australia are pumping out as much of this toxic waste that they can and are trying to call it food. It is nothing but cancer causing poison. And yes they try to tell us it is growing pains... Any AMA Doctor will tell you they took an oath to do no harm. Doesn't mean they wont stand by and watch someone else poison you.

A rather belated comment from winter time in New Zealand. "Long Road out of Eden" has to up there with my all time most amazing most significant ever songs. It expressed something of the deep anger and pent up frustration of eight long years of the unbelievable Bush and Chainey stupidities. It was such an amazing time when last year we saw the fruit of all that desperate longing for a return to truth and decency as Obama was elected. Here in far away NZ please be aware that I, like 90% of others Kiwi's, cheered ourselves horse at your wonderful victory - my wife and I sat glued to the TV much of the day and literally bawled our eyes out with joy when Obama's victory was confirmed. Congratulations America - at least to those who didn't have a "Frail grasp on the big picture". Don Henley spoke for us all.

I so agree with all of you and the problems America is dealing with. My husband and I are college educated statistics in the economy right now. both worked our asses off to get where we are and someone can come in one day and say "sorry, laid off"
But Bruce, please, in honestly, tell me what obama has done for us, what is "the change" can you tell me that??

There are issues and problems that no one person or political party can solve by themselves. Don H. and the Eagles have frquently illustrated several of them in a most thoughful way which have been mentioned herein. The only cure that will effect a solution is when everyone realizes that we must all try to correct these issues and not cast blame. You can't build yourself up by tearing others down. The fall of Rome should have been a lesson for all people of the world. Self seeking hedonistic cultures do not survive. Wake up America and for that matter, all of the other nations. As Pogo Possum said-"We have met the enemy and they are us."
