Mohammed Rafi (December 24, 1924 - July 31st, 1980) was one of the greatest Indian male recording artists and playback singers ever. The youngest of six brothers, Rafi was born on December 24, 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab, British India. He made his music debut at the age of 13 when he performed for the first time in public. His professional debut as a playback singer was made in the 1941 film "Gul Baloch", followed by "Gaon Ki Gorj" in 1945. During his impressive career, Mohammed Rafi also made appearances in the movies "Laila Majnu" where he sang "Tera Jawla Jis Ne Dekha", in 1945, and in "Jugnu" in 1947. He had an extremely successful career and his legacy lives on long time after his death. Mohammed Rafi died July 31st 1980 following a heart attack. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral in Mumbai. In his lifetime, Rafi received numerous awards and recognitions including National Film Award, Best National Singer Award, Padma Shri Award, six Filmfare Awards, and many, many more. In 2000 he was named Best Singer of the Millennium by Stardust Magazine. According to reports, Rafi sang over 4,500 Hindi film songs, over 100 non-Hindi film songs, and over 300 non-film songs during his career.
