She started her acting career at the young age of five and after the death of her father, when she was 13, Master Vinayak, the owner of a movie company helped her launch her career. After the death of Vinayak, Lata was mentored by music director Ghulam Haider. It was then when she got her first break with the song "Dil Mera Toda" from the movie "Majboor". Next year, another major hit single followed, "Aayega Aanewaala", from the movie "Mahal". In 1958, Mangeshkar won Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for "Aaja Re Pardesi" from the movie "Madhumati". Her career continued to bloom and she recorded songs with Mukesh, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi amongst others. In 1973, Lata was honored with the National Film Award for Best Female Playback singer for the song "Beeti Na Bitai" from the movie "Parichay". The '90s were the perfect time for a new venture, as Lata launched her very own production house for Hindi movies. It was also the time when she won her third National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. In 1999, fans were presented with a fragrance named after the artist, "Lata Eau de Parfum".
