Car songs are a great little sub-genre of rock and roll music, and they are some of the best tunes to blast while cruising down main street- especially with the improvements and breakthroughs with car technology. So, if you’re looking for some great car songs, here’s a list that should get your engine revving.

1) “Drive My Car” by The Beatles: Who needs a career when you already have a driver? This is a classic car song about a wannabe superstar who has got her priorities mixed up, or does she? She already has a driver, so she must be on here way to fame.

2) “Fun, Fun, Fun” by The Beach Boys: The Beach Boys have tons of songs about cars, but this is probably one of the best. With its grooving tune and fun harmonies, we’re rooting for the little rebel.

3) “Low Rider” by War: Every time you hear this song, you just want to go to the nearest auto parts store and get some hydraulics, don’t you? But not only is this a great song about having a cool ride, its bass and vocals are the epitome of cool.

4) “Life is a Highway” by Tom Cochrane : Technically this song isn’t about a car, but rather about driving in general. When you hear Cochrane’s vocals and driving beat, you can just feel your hair blowing in the wind, with the top down along some state highway in the middle of America. And you want to ride that highway all night long.

5) “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett: Muscle cars, girls, what’s not to love? But besides the car imagery, what makes this song great are Pickett’s soulful vocals and rhythm.

6) “Mercedes Benz” by Janis Joplin: Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? Just this once? Please? Joplin’s raspy, a capella vocals really make this a standout gem. The simplicity of the tune and lyrics deftly highlight Joplin’s pleading as well as her tongue-in-cheek playfulness.

7) “I Can’t Drive 55” by Sammy Hagar: I think we all feel this way sometimes—especially in a rental. Hagar’s complaint against the speed limit rings true for all of us who feel the need for speed, and that’s why it’s one of the best cars songs ever written.

8) “Little Red Corvette” by Prince: He’s talking about a car right? With Prince everything is always a little sexual (well maybe more than a little). In any case, this is the one of the best songs about a car that manages to be both fun and a bit cheeky at the same time.

9) “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC: Again, not really a song about cars so much as driving, but it’s still a classic. AC/DC’s driving rhythm and screaming vocals not only make this song a classic, to listen but to drive to—preferably at high speeds.
